Haley's Pick 🍽️

You probably know her as @milehighandhungry. Each week, Haley shares the one place she’s obsessed with right now. From hidden gems to hot new openings, if she picks it, it’s worth the hype.

Haley's Review of Riot BBQ
Riot BBQ on South Delaware feels like a backyard cookout run by a Top Chef, because it is. Chef Manny Barella and pitmaster Patrick Klaiber have teamed up to blend Monterrey flavors with Texas-style smoke, and the results are seriously craveable.

The brisket steals the show: tender, deeply smoky, and finished with Barella’s bold spice rub. Get it solo or wrapped in buttery Raquelita tortillas. The pulled pork brings heat with ancho, guajillo, and morita chiles, and the al pastor ribs are sticky, sweet, and slightly charred in all the right ways.

Even the sides are insanely good! Think crunchy pepita-macha slaw and banana pudding served in a jar that tastes just like childhood (but better). Every bite feels intentional.

It’s barbecue with heart, history, and just the right amount of heat. Riot BBQ isn’t just a meal, it’s a moment worth lining up for.

Local Insights

🌅 Best Balcony Views: Third-floor rooms facing the Esopus offer the most dramatic waterfall views; ask before booking.

🚶 Walk to Main Street: Downtown Saugerties is under a 10-minute walk, but the hill between hotel and town is steep—bring comfortable shoes.

🥾 Saugerties Lighthouse: The trailhead to the Lighthouse and Hudson River is a 6-minute drive—go early for sunrise or a crowd-free stroll.

🛁 Spa Distance: The full-service Waterside Spa isn’t on hotel grounds—it’s about a mile away (walkable in good weather, but best to drive if pressed for time).

What folks are saying

Based on the 50 most recent Google reviews
Reviews praise the waterfall views, tidy rooms, and easy proximity to Saugerties. Staff interactions swing between praised and sharply critiqued—the front desk is seen as friendly by some and unfriendly or inattentive by others. Room comfort (especially beds and bathrooms) earns strong marks, but some find furnishings tired or the property noisier than expected. The spa is not attached—guests must drive or walk; some feel this is misleading. Breakfast is widely considered disappointing and minimal. Recurring negatives include spotty service, inconsistent housekeeping, limited dining hours, and a few accessibility misses. Still, many consider it the best stay in town for special events, scenery, or a breezy riverside weekend.
